Homeschool Pilot Reaching Out to New Audiences
Hopkins Demonstration Forest hosted its first Homeschool Day, a new pilot program created to connect families with Oregon’s forests through self-guided exploration and hands-on learning. In addition, it is open to all, not just homeschooled groups!
The event welcomed homeschool families from across the region for a day of outdoor discovery. Participants explored forest trails, visited educational kiosks, and took part in guided activities highlighting forest ecology, wildlife, and tree identification. Families were encouraged to slow down, observe, and record their experiences in nature journals — turning the forest itself into a living classroom.
“This day was designed to let families learn together in a real woodland setting,” said Peter Matzka, OSU Extension Forestry & Natural Resources Educator. “By combining self-directed learning with simple field activities, we’re helping students connect with the forest in ways that build curiosity, confidence, and stewardship.”
The pilot program was developed in partnership between Forests Forever Inc. (FFI) and Oregon State University Extension, with support from Hopkins staff and volunteers. The goal is to establish monthly Homeschool Days beginning in 2026, each featuring a different seasonal or forestry theme — from wildlife tracking and native plants to maple sugaring and forest engineering.
The response from families was overwhelmingly positive. Parents appreciated the open-ended learning approach and the opportunity to meet other homeschoolers interested in science and the outdoors. “It’s amazing to have a place like this so close to home,” one parent shared. “My kids are already asking when the next one will be.”
As Hopkins continues to grow its educational programs, Homeschool Day adds another dimension to the forest’s mission: providing accessible, high-quality outdoor learning for all ages.
