Ken Everett
Executive Director
Ken Everett is one of the co-founders of Forests Forever, Inc. in 1990. Ken worked for Publishers Paper Company as a procurement forester and created their Management Assistance Program (MAP) in the early 1980s to assist woodland owners with the management of their forest properties.
Ken had the opportunity to work with Howard Hopkins over the years to manage his forestland. When Publishers was sold in 1986, Ken took the MAP program he had been managing and transitioned it into a private forestry consulting company named MAP, Inc. Ken retired from his consulting business in 2020.
Ken has served as FFI Board Chairman and is currently our Executive Director. Ken has provided an incredible number of volunteer hours and services to Forests Forever over the years. Besides his leadership roles and managing the day-to-day activities of FFI, Ken has used his many connections in the forest industry and community to raise thousands of dollars in materials, services, and cash donations to support FFI and our activities. Ken regularly attends the monthly Community Forestry Days, manages all of our timber sales and log marketing, and can be found around the FFI properties doing almost everything and anything nearly every day. Ken lives with his wife Glenda in the Colton Community.
Frank Wille
Chair
Frank Wille retired from the paper mill of Longview Fibre Company in 2006 and returned to Clackamas County.
He became an OSU Master Gardener and joined other MGs in maintaining the native plant garden at Hopkins. Frank joined the FFI Board in 2013 and is now Chairman. He is responsible for providing overall leadership on the Board and manages their monthly Board meetings. Frank is married to Lyna Low whose parents, Joe & Zola, own Highland Farms of Oregon and were early supporters of the formation of the Hopkins Demonstration Forest. Frank is a member of Beavercreek Lions—one of our regular supporters of FFI’s Education Consortium.
Mike Piazza
Treasurer
Mike and his family relocated to Oregon in 1991 to help Bank of America establish itself in the Pacific Northwest. Recently retired, Mike has spent 50 years in the Banking Industry working for both Bank of America and Key Bank where he served as a Retail Banking Executive managing branches in the Multnomah, Clackamas, Hood River and Marion counties.
Mike and his wife, Cindy, have two grown sons and have been blessed with 5 grandchildren that take up part of his retirement calendar.
Mike grew up on a ranch in Northern California so he is accustomed to working in the forest. Joining the FFI Board in 2008, Mike currently serves as our Treasurer and is a regular volunteer every Monday and our monthly Community Forest Days.
Mike says that working out at Hopkins takes him back decades to when he was a young man working on his uncle’s ranch. Working in the forest is his “Happy Place”, as he has introduced many friends and associates to the wonders of Hopkins Demonstration Forest. Mike’s former Key Bank Team always wanted to know when they could go out to Hopkins Forest for a meeting or retreat, it was always a special time.
Pamela Hayden
Secretary
Pam grew up in Marin County, California and moved to the beautiful state of Oregon because of her love of trees and the natural environment.
She studied Anthropology and Environmental Design at Cal Berkley and received a master’s degree in landscape architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, before moving here. Pam worked for Clackamas County Department of Transportation and Development in Planning and Historic Preservation for 32 years. During her last ten years with the County, she was a Senior Policy Analyst. When Pam retired, a major focus of her life became the preservation, research and restoration of the historic Molalla Log House. She joined the Board of Forests Forever, Inc. when the Board welcomed the hand-hewn log house for reconstruction at Hopkins Demonstration Forest. Her background, experience and interests fit well with the mission at Hopkins to provide education about forestry heritage resources and sustainable forest management. Pam also enjoys spending time with her husband, three kids and nine grandchildren.
Mike Bondi
Mike Bondi is one of the co-founders of Forests Forever, Inc. in 1990. At that time, Mike was Oregon State University’s Extension Forestry Agent in Clackamas County.
His memories include being with Howard Hopkins in the 1980s on the former Grouse Hollow Tree Farm (now Hopkins Demonstration Forest) for a variety of projects and activities. Besides serving on the FFI Board since its inception, Mike managed all of the education and outreach programs at Hopkins until 2004 when the first full-time Forestry Educator was hired.
Mike retired from OSU in March, 2022 and is devoting more time to FFI activities. Currently, he is the Fundraising Coordinator for the Outreach Center and is updating FFI’s website and increasing media outreach.
Glenn Ahrens
Glenn Ahrens is the Oregon State University Extension Forester, for Clackamas, Marion, and Hood River Counties.
He has served as the OSU representative on the FFI Board since 2012. FFI’s Demonstration Forests provide a premier venue for OSU Extension Forestry programs in Oregon. Thus, a big part of Glenn’s work involves developing and delivering programs at FFI’s Demonstration Forests in collaboration with FFI and many other partners in forestry education.
Glenn has a B.S. in Forestry from Humboldt State University (1982) and an M.S. in Forest Science from Oregon State University (1990). He has over 40 years of experience in research, Extension, and private consulting. Glenn’s areas of specialty include forest ecology, silviculture, vegetation management, and hardwood management.
Bob Kahl
Robert “Bob” Kahl retired from the insurance industry in 2010 after spending over 40 years in a variety of industry roles including underwriter, independent insurance agent, and manager of the property casualty program for the Oregon city and county risk pool.
Bob and his wife Marianne live on their small tree farm near Oregon City. Bob became aware of Hopkins after coming to help Marianne on one of the Master Gardener’s volunteer work days.
Bob served as chair of the Hopkins Facilities Committee for many years before stepping down in 2023. The committee is made up of volunteers who take on the various tasks needed to maintain and care for the buildings and equipment at Hopkins. Over the past several years the Facilities Committee has been involved in major construction projects under Bob’s leadership. Bob continues to serve on the committee.
Mike Haasken
Mike was the Oregon Department of Forestry’s representative on the Board from 2010 until his retirement from ODF in 2020.
He has remained on the Board since then, as a General Public member. Mike has been a regular volunteer at Hopkins for many years—including at the monthly Community Forestry Days, staffing the Lookout Tower, and helping the Sawmill team
milling cedar boards for the new Outreach Center. Also, Mike works as a part-time “handy man” at Hopkins one day per week doing many different duties around the numerous buildings, on road and trail maintenance, plus a variety of tasks in the woods. Mike has been involved at Hopkins since 2007.
Mike worked for Oregon Department of Forestry from 1994 to 2006 as a timber marketing forester in the Tillamook State Forest and, then, was the Stewardship Forester at the Molalla ODF office 2006 to 2020. Also, Mike served on ODF Incident Management Teams on numerous large fires as a Fireline Supervisor and as a Fire Behavior Analyst. During his last month of work, he was involved with the Labor Day fires in 2020. Prior to moving to Oregon, Mike was a forester with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for 12 years.
Michael Daly, MD
Dr. Michael Daly is a retired Nuclear Medicine physician practicing at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin for twenty-four years until 2005.
Mike and wife, Jan, lived in the Beavercreek community until 2023. Mike was a regular jogger in the Hopkins forest beginning in the 1990s. It wasn’t long before he became a regular Community Forestry Day volunteer the second Saturday of each month. Besides continuing to volunteer at these monthly work days, Mike joined the Board and took on the role as the Everett Hall Building Manager when that facility opened in 2012, Mike has coordinated all advertising and marketing, showing facilities to prospective users, scheduling rentals, plus managing upkeep, repairs and maintenance for the past ten years.
Ben Smith
In 2007, Ben Smith came to Oregon fresh from the University of Idaho where he received his formal education in Forest Products & Business Management.
He was raised in Montana where he gained a love for the forest that ended up guiding his career choice within the forestry/forest products industry. He and his family put their roots down in Silverton Oregon where they continue to live today.
Ben’s first introduction to Forests Forever was participating in our Community Forest Day in November 2021 when we began the removal of the mobile home to clear the site for the new Outreach Center. Ben brought his wife and three daughters to help out, too. Ben says he is “really excited to join the FFI Board to continue to assist in helping youth get excited about Natural Resources and particularly Forestry!”
Ben has been serving on the FFI board since February 2022 and is the Log Buyer for RSG Forest Products located in Molalla, Oregon.
Tyson Losli
Tyson Losli has worked in the forest industry for the past 30 years. He started his career after earning a B.S degree in Forest Management at Oregon State University.
He then began running the student logging crew at the OSU Research Forest in Corvallis. In 1995, Tyson began working in private industry managing some of Western Oregon’s most productive forests. For 27 years he worked for Willamette Industries and Weyerhaeuser Company and for the past 6 years as their Forest Manager for the company’s lands in Clackamas, Marion, and Hood River Counties. In 2022, Tyson left Weyerhaeuser to become the Forest Manager for Port Blakley’s 30,000 acre tree farm in Clackamas County.
Tyson represents the forest industry on the FFI Board. According to Tyson, he’s always been impressed by the work the non-profit has been doing over the years. He joined the FFI board because of his love of the industry and sees the need for forestry education.
Staff
Peter Matzka
OSU Extension Program Coordinator
Peter Matzka is Oregon State University’s Extension Program Coordinator serving the educational outreach and public engagement at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest.
His position is unique at OSU and in Oregon—with joint funding for his salary coming from both the Clackamas Extension Service District and Forests Forever, Inc. This collaboration between Clackamas Extension and Forests Forever began in 2004. Besides providing salary support, FFI provides full access to their nearly 500 acres of managed forestland at Hopkins, the Schink Demonstration Forest, and Pedee Woodlands for Peter’s education programs. FFI also provides office, supplies and services, tools and equipment for Peter’s use.
Peter’s primary audiences are high school Career Technical Education Programs, natural resources educators, woodland owners and the public. Science-inquiry field studies, career focused service learning, and volunteerism are the primary methods used to directly engage over 5,000 youth and 1,000 adults annually. Cruising timber, trail construction, milling lumber, planting trees, or completing water quality surveys are just a few of the activities conducted by participants at Hopkins.
Peter attended Oregon State University where he obtained a B.S. in Forest Engineering, M.S. in Logging Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Harvesting with a minor in Forest Science.
Julie Handy
Administrative Assistant
Julie Handy has been Forests Forever’s Administrative Assistant since 2018.
But, Julie worked for Ken Everett and his MAP, Inc. consulting company for 30 years and has been doing all of FFI’s paperwork since our founding. Julie, and her husband Tom live in the Oregon City area—so is nearby to Hopkins and very convenient!
As Forests Forever’s Administrative Assistant, Julie handles the organization’s communications (phones, emails), mailings, financial transactions, attends Board meetings to take notes, and takes care of all business and rental paperwork for our facilities, plus fills in for Mike Daly in showing Everett Hall to prospective users…and makes sure the hall is clean and ready for use.
