Truffle Foray and Fundraiser

The recent truffle hunting foray and fundraiser for Forests Forever was this past March 29.  Nineteen people attended and enjoyed a beautiful morning in the forest at FFI’s Pedee Woodlands in the central Oregon Coast Range.  The event raised more than $1,500 for the non-profit.

According to Mike Piazza, FFI’s Board member and organizer for the foray, the event was a great success.  “We had a wonderful group of people from all around the Willamette Valley area—and all interested in truffles, how to find them in the forest, and how to use them in cooking.”

Dr. Charles Lefevre, a noted truffle expert in the Eugene area, led the foray.  Charles was joined by three other experienced truffle hunters and their dogs.  The dogs were used to scent the truffles (similar to mushrooms but living entirely underground) and indicate where to dig.

During approximately 90 minutes of hunting, the group dug about 3 pounds of Oregon Black Truffles.  The wholesale market value was approximately $1,000.  Each program participant was able to bring truffles for dinner!

“This was a really fun and educational event,” said Piazza.  “We hope to offer at least one foray each winter.”
