Youth Forestry Summer Camp Opens Registration
A new Future Foresters Summer Camp for youth (ages 11 through 13; incoming grades 6-
8) will be June 15-19 at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Beavercreek. The week-long
day camp is sponsored by Forests Forever, Inc.—the owner and manager of the 140-acre
Hopkins Forest property.
Registration for the camp is now open, first-come; first-served. Space is limited. Camp
times are 8:30am-4:00pm each day. Campers bring their own lunch and snacks.
Activities are in the forest every day and include learning about what foresters do to care
for the land, how to identify local plants and animals, and hands-on activities like helping
newly planted trees grow, preparing to thin a forest, building a forest trail, and creating
wildlife habitat areas.
Mike Bondi, retired Extension Forestry Agent in Clackamas County and Oregon State
University professor of forestry for 44 years, will lead the camp. Lindel Evers, Forests
Forever’s Youth Forestry Educator will co-lead the camp with Bondi. Other foresters with
Forests Forever will participate, too.
According to Bondi, “This camp is for youth who love being outside in the woods exploring
and learning about one of Oregon’s most treasured natural resources—our forests.
Professional foresters play a key role in caring for the land, our water, streams and
wetlands, producing wood products, ensuring we have forests for the future, and
protecting our wildlife. I look forward to showing interested youth what we do every day.”
